SELECTION: MEANING AND DEFINITIONS

          The Selection is the process of choosing the most suitable candidate for the vacant position in the organization. In other words, selection means weeding out unsuitable applicants and selecting those individuals with prerequisite qualifications and capabilities to fill the jobs in the organization.

          Organisation have always been interested in selecting the “right” persons for a particular job. Selection is a part of the recruitment function. To select means to choose. Selection is the process of choosing people by obtaining and assessing requirements about the applicants with a view to matching these with the job requirements.

         In the words of Dale Yoder “Selection is the process by which candidates for employment are divided into two classes – those who will be offered employment and those who will not.”

         In the words of Keith Davis, “Selection is the process by which an organisation choose from a list of screened applicants the person or persons who best meet the selection criteria for the position available.”

       In the words of Michael Jucius. “The selection procedure is the system of functions and devices adopted in a given company for the purpose of ascertaining whether or not candidate possess the qualifications called for by a specific job or for progression through a series of jobs.”
