Qualities of a Good Salesman

1. Courtesy: A salesman should always be polite and courteous towards his customers. It costs nothing but wins permanent customers for the product. He should help the customers in making the right choice or in selecting the products. This will definitely help in winning over the confidence of the customers.

2. Good behavior:  A salesman should be co-operative and courteous. Good behavior enables one to win the confidence of the customers. He should not feel irritated if the buyer puts up many questions even if the questions are irrelevant. It is also not necessary that the person he is trying to convince buys the products. A salesman has to remain courteous in every case.


3. Social Qualities: A salesman should be social and have the ability to mix up with people. He should have the patience to listen to the customers and understand their needs. He should be polite and humble in talking to the customers. He should remain courteous with the customers throughout the sale presentation because his success depends upon the favorable attitudes of the customers. He should have the quality of adjusting with the customers of a different nature.


4. Expand your knowledge: You might have read so many posts saying salesperson should have the complete knowledge about the product and market. Though It is salient successful sales executives keep on expanding their knowledge by learning new things outside the domain also.
Other than product knowledge I buy and read at least two commercial books in a month to improve my knowledge in business.
Learning always give confidence to people. Don’t stop learning.


5. Ability to persuade:   A salesman should be good in conversation so that he can engage the person he is attending in conversation. He should be able to convince him and create the desire in his mind to possess the commodity.

6. OptimismAn optimist takes over attention and interest in a prospect much faster and easier than a pessimist. No one likes pessimistic people, especially in sales. While on a phone it’s easy to hear if a person on the other side is smiling or not. Though, it’s not only a smile on his face that makes a salesperson optimistic. What an optimist does in case of rejection? That’s right, he doesn’t give up. In the face of a failure or objection, he tries to overcome it. Persistence is a crucial quality in the sales world as a rejection for a salesperson is a usual thing. Thus, an optimistic person will use his intelligence and polite persistence to save a situation.

7. Mental qualities:   A good salesman should possess certain mental qualities like imagination, initiative, self-confidence, sharp memory, alertness, etc. He should be able to understand the needs and preferences of customers.

8. Impressive Personality: A good salesman should possess a good personality. What fragrance is to a flower is personality to an individual. It is the ability to impress others. A charming personality always creates a good impression. He should possess good health, an attractive appearance, and an impressive voice. He should not suffer from physical handicaps like stammering and limping etc.

9. Knowledge of the Company: Consumers always relate the products to the company. Therefore a company’s reputation is a very important factor for effective salesmanship. A salesman has to present his company in a very positive way. This requires that he knows the following facts about his own company-the origin, the present status, the technology, reputation, philosophy, capital, location of the factories, the facilities available etc.
